Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has slammed “useless” extras, such as text alerts and onboard weddings, for damaging easyJet’s reputation. During his High Court hearing against the airline he founded in 1995, the tycoon accused it of “gouging” customers using “short-term responses” to revenue pressures.
Sir Stelios cited a £5.99 text message reminder service, saying that when he used it, he received a text at 10.55 – to tell him that boarding for his flight closed at 10.20.

Some flights from Birmingham International Airport have been cancelled because of volcanic ash.
Ryanair said it would not be flying to Spain or southern France until midnight on Saturday because of an ash cloud over northern Spain.
The airport said flights to the Canary Islands had also been hit.
Other carriers are still flying but the airport has urged people to check with their airlines or the airport website before setting out.

Airport officials have made their first seizure of a suspected mephedrone-like substance since its importation was banned, the UK Border Agency has said.
Officers at Stansted Airport, Essex, seized 103kg in five packets labelled as methylone, a compound similar to the drug ministers hope to ban by April 16.
Tests will now take place on substance, which was bound for London and arrived by fast parcel from Mumbai, India.

A strike by British Airways cabin crew will go ahead after talks between the airline and the Unite union collapsed.
The three-day walkout begins at midnight, with a further four days of action set to commence on 27 March.
BA chief Willie Walsh said the strike was "deeply regrettable". The airline has said 65% of passengers will reach their destination during the action.
Unite's joint general secretary, Tony Woodley, said that BA "ultimately wants to go to war with this union".
